Reference, Moodboard, or Example?

A reference supports a decision

A reference is a concrete product, page, section, interaction, or visual technique that you study in relation to a task. It should keep its source and explain what is relevant: structure, hierarchy, behavior, content, or visual treatment. A reference is evidence, not an instruction to copy.

A moodboard aligns a direction

A moodboard combines several images, colors, materials, type samples, interfaces, and other cues. Its job is to make an emerging tone discussable before every decision is defined. The relationship between items matters more than any single item.

An example explains an idea

An example can be any illustration that makes a statement clearer. It may be worth studying, but it does not automatically represent an approved direction or a reusable precedent. Calling everything a reference can accidentally give a casual illustration too much authority.

How to choose the right artifact

• Use a reference to compare solutions and justify a specific design decision.
• Use a moodboard to align a team or client around atmosphere and visual language.
• Use an example to clarify what you mean without presenting it as a direction.

Use all three in one project

A moodboard can align the visual direction at kickoff. The team can then collect references for specific decisions such as the hero, navigation, forms, or motion. During review, individual examples clarify conclusions without turning one website into a template. Label each item as direction, evidence, or illustration so reviewers discuss the same level of decision.
